Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut sparked controversy after praising a disputed report that claimed more than two dozen Iranian-linked “shadow fleet” vessels had bypassed a newly imposed U.S. blockade. Murphy responded “Awesome” on social media to the report from shipping journal Lloyd’s List, prompting immediate backlash.
The Pentagon quickly rejected the report. Chief spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that claims about at least 26 Iranian-backed ships evading the blockade were false. The blockade itself was initiated by President Donald Trump as part of escalating tensions with Iran.
Murphy, a vocal critic of U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict, has recently taken strong positions against American policy. During a trip to Spain, he warned that the United States faces what he described as its greatest threat to democracy since the Civil War. He further claimed the country is already experiencing a form of authoritarianism and called on global progressives to resist it.
His reaction to the report drew sharp criticism, particularly from those who viewed his comments as supportive of Iran, which is widely labeled a state sponsor of terrorism. Critics argued that praising such developments was inappropriate and misleading, especially given the Pentagon’s denial of the report’s accuracy.
