Iran fires on tanker near Oman after re-closing Strait of Hormuz……. See More

Tensions escalated in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly fired on vessels near Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization. Two IRGC gunboats approached a tanker about 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman and opened fire without provocation, while another ship was struck by an unidentified projectile later in the same area. Damage was reported, though no casualties or environmental impact occurred.

The incident follows renewed confusion over Iran’s stance on the strait, after it claimed to reopen the passage but then signaled it would close it again in response to a U.S.-led naval blockade. The United States Central Command has increased its presence, with warships escorting vessels and emphasizing freedom of navigation.

Iranian officials said control of the strait has returned to military oversight, warning that ships may require authorization and toll payments. The IRGC also threatened to block transit as long as the blockade remains in place.

The escalation comes amid weeks of maritime attacks and rising regional tensions since late February. While some vessels continue to pass, others remain stalled as risks grow. Diplomatic efforts, including mediation by Pakistan, are ongoing but uncertain.
