President Donald Trump said Monday that he deleted a controversial AI-generated image of himself that appeared to depict him as Jesus Christ, citing public confusion over the post. Speaking to CBS News, Trump explained that he typically avoids removing posts but felt it was necessary in this case to prevent misunderstanding.
According to Trump, many viewers misinterpreted the image. He claimed he initially believed the depiction showed him as a doctor rather than a religious figure. The image featured Trump wearing flowing robes and placing a hand on a patient in a hospital bed, with a glowing light effect. Trump said he associated the scene with medical care, noting the presence of symbols resembling those of the Red Cross and medical personnel. He described it as a lighthearted portrayal of himself “playing doctor” and helping people recover.
Trump maintained that “most people” shared his interpretation of the image as medical rather than religious. However, the post drew criticism online, including from conservative activist Riley Gaines, who questioned Trump’s intentions. Gaines wrote on social media that she did not understand why he would share such an image and suggested that “a little humility would serve him well,” adding that “God shall not be mocked.”
Trump dismissed the idea that Gaines influenced his decision to remove the post, stating he did not take her opinion into account and adding that he is “not a big fan” of her. Despite the disagreement, Gaines later signaled she would continue to support Trump and his political agenda.
Overall, Trump framed the deletion as an effort to reduce confusion rather than a response to criticism.
