Deep beneath the earth, Iran has developed extensive “missile cities,” revealing a complex and potentially destabilizing dimension of its military capabilities. This underground arsenal is not only vast but highly diverse, incorporating a wide range of missile systems designed to evade advanced air defense networks. It includes short-range tactical weapons such as the Fateh and Zolfaghar families, alongside more powerful medium-range systems, all stored in fortified mountain facilities.
Central to global concern is Iran’s progress in medium-range ballistic missile technology. Systems like the Shahab-3, Khorramshahr, and the solid-fueled Sejjil are capable of reaching targets up to 2,000 kilometers away. Although Iranian officials describe this range as a self-imposed limit, Western analysts argue the technology could enable significantly longer distances over time.
The effectiveness of these systems was demonstrated in 2020 through coordinated regional strikes, highlighting their accuracy and operational readiness, and reinforcing concerns about their evolving strategic threat.
