The United States and Iran have both declared victory in a war that lasted more than 30 days, after the two sides agreed to a temporary ceasefire on April 7, 2026. U.S. President Donald Trump told AFP that the agreement was a “total and complete victory” for the United States. Speaking by phone, Trump said he believed China had persuaded Iran to come to the negotiating table, and that enriched uranium would be kept fully secure under the ceasefire. He described the war as justified, accusing Iran of enriching uranium with the aim of producing nuclear weapons—an allegation Iran has denied.
Trump also referred to a strong framework for a long-term agreement. He claimed that most of the 15 points proposed by the United States had already been accepted by Iran. However, he acknowledged that the two sides were still far from reaching a comprehensive deal. Iran has submitted its own 10-point plan, which Trump said could be workable. The proposal, which may serve as a basis for upcoming negotiations, includes several sticking points that Washington had previously considered unacceptable. Nevertheless, Trump noted that it remains unclear what will happen next.
Meanwhile, Iran issued mixed statements after announcing a two-week ceasefire with the United States. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the truce and described it as a victory, despite more than a month of attacks that resulted in the deaths of top leaders and senior officials. The council stated that the enemy had suffered a severe, historic, and undeniable defeat in what it called a cowardly, illegal, and criminal war against the Iranian nation, and asserted that Iran had achieved a great victory.
